Unequal Scenes

Johnny Miller, a South African photographer, has a storytelling project titled Unequal Scenes that focuses on inequality around the world. The project that started in South Africa and has expanded to six different countries throughout the world - South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, India, Mexico, and the USA.

Witnessing the massive inequality gap during my travels to the Western Cape of South Africa left a massive impression. Informal settlements, with their corrugated tin roofs and wood scrap walls, are often separated from their affluent neighbors by tall electrical fences.

The creeping normalcy of the growing inequality of income and wealth bothers me immensely. While it is inevitable that well functioning economies will naturally have inequality, as people need extrinsic incentives to work, at what point do they become toxic?
