Over twenty years have passed since I have been golfing. My husband, who has never once picked up a golf club with the intention to hit a ball for sport, and I went with our neighbors to Lake Hiawatha Municipal Golf Course. We had a good time (not keeping score helps)! Sixty years ago this was the only course in Minneapolis that allowed Black golfers to play. Since the publishing of news article linked, the Minneapolis Park Board has made adjustments to the Hiawatha Golf Course Area Master Plan based on feedback from the community. There is still quite a bit of controversy around what might become of the land to address the consequences of climate change. Hopefully the City and Park officials, in collaboration with the public, work together to find solutions that will be welcoming and inclusive to all people.
